protecting a directory

What chmod do I use to protect a directory but still allow me to post a link to a specific pfd file in that directory (diagrams).... so someone cannot just click http://xxxxx.com/diagrams and see all of of the files there?

I would create another directory inside of said directory and chmod to 755 or 777 if you dont care who has access to it.

Maybe i didn't explain correctly what i want to accpmplish.

I need to prevent anyone from typing http://corvettemechanic.com/diagrams <--- as you can see it opens the directory and you can see all the diagrams.

I need that NOT to happen, and yet still be able to post a link to 1 of the charts inside the diagrams foler and have it work, will it (a link to the actual file) still work if I chmod the diagrams 'directory' to 644 or what ever?

In other words... I don't want anyone to be able to fully open that diagrams directory... only be able to view/open a file I post as a link from it.

If you're using a cPanel host: Use "Index Manager" on the bottom of cPanel home right next IP deny manager. Navigate to the directory, click on it's name and select "No Indexes"

You can still link to files but no one will be able to see the directory listing.

I put an empty index.html in my folders to avoid that. It's nothing special to me, everyone does it.

If there is no index.html, .htm, or .php, the directory contents may be displayed on some servers.
