Did this message just start up on its own or did you install some new hardware or software and then start experiencing this? If you have just put the Voodoo board in , remove it and see if it will start up properly ..

Please don't format yet. This will be alot of work, but if we can save it...Why not?

Since you can't start in safe mode? Your gonna have to try to use the system restore from the command line. Hopefully you can get to this point. here's how: Start the System Restore tool at a command prompt
1. Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in Safe Mode with a command prompt.

For additional information about the Safe mode with a command prompt,
Here is A description of the Safe mode boot options in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/
2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.
3. Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.

Then hopefully you can get back into windows.

If you still cannot get into windows at this point the only 2 options left are:
1. Do an inplace upgrade of XP
2. Format and reinstall. (which we don't want you to do, if you don't gotta)

To do an inplace upgrade of Windows XP by starting your computer from the Windows XP CD, follow these steps:
1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
2. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For more information about how to configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, see your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.
3. You receive the following message on the Welcome to Setup screen that appears:
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER to set up Windows XP.

4. On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.
6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reinstall Windows XP. After you repair Windows XP, you may have to reactivate your copy of Windows XP.

Once this is done you should be able to start windows. your data and programs should remain intact.

i hope this helps

You can find new voodoo drivers here: http://drivers.soft32.com/driver/dow...ers-18646.html In case you may need to reinstall your video card.

When this is all done try uninstalling mcafee firewall and virusscan

At this point you can reinstall McAfee if you wish. It's a pretty good product but, it has some driver issues. If you don't want to fool with mcafee anymore then I would recommend trying:

http://free.grisoft.com for AVG antivirus. It's totally free and just as good as mcafee

http://www.zonelabs.com for ZoneAlarm firewall. Once again it's free and one of the best on the market.

here is a link on how to manually remove mcafee 7.0 from your computer. http://stuff.mit.edu/people/bbrids/virus.html
