I know this aint alot, but don't ya hate rebooting after updates when ya got a running count?

I read somewhere: lower than 0.3 is good, higher than 0.9 needs improvement.

here is mine:
3:28PM up 30 days, 2:37, 1 user, load averages: 0.11, 0.04, 0.01

That's an old 1000MHZ amdK-6 I think that was running the GUI and all the servers which were actually being used albeit just a little.

I think it was Fedora Core 1 or RH9 or 10.

Lol, I shouldn't compare yours to my Intel server (2.8G HZ/1GB Ram).

What are you guys talking about?

He would be talking about how long a linux box has been running without a reboot.

have fun. I hope you already know the OS or are willig to put a crapload of time into learning it.

If you ask me....any 'nix environment will never topple MS off the top of the pile. Its way too complicated for the average PC user.

I personally would never use one as a day to day pc....but only to run as a server/database workhorse.

just my .02's

Well I want to learn my way arround because I'm going to a computer science course/camp(nerd camp lol). And they have daul-booting pcs(redhat/windows) so I want to know a little about what I'm doing.

Also what linux do you use for servers?

And how do you pronouce linux? I say line-ux, is that right?

You can use any of the flavors as a server basically.

Meaning when you install it...you can install as much or as little of the server apps that you want.

All flavors I have installed have just about everything you would need to have a webserver/mailserver/fileserver/ftp server/etc... right out of the box.

If you dont plan on using it as a server...it would be best not to install the server apps. Redhat will let you choose what kind of installation you want....workstation or server and install the apps that is needed for your choice. Or you can do a custom install and have a mix.

PS...its Lin ux....lin as in linda ux as in tux

Actually Zero, it's pronounced "lean-ux"... and that's straight from the horses mouth itself, Linus Torvalds (http://www.paul.sladen.org/pronunciation/torvalds-says-linux.wav).

LOL... Don't feel bad. I'm still in the vast minority of linux users who still mispronounce it "line-ux". I was so ingrained in calling it line-ux before I ever met another linux user that I thought he was crazy when he pronounced it lin-ux... and even a couple of years after hearing Torvalds declare it lean-ux, I still say line-ux. Oh well, tomatoe, tomahtoe... it doesn't reall matter... it still tastes the same.

what nationality is Torvalds? I dont quite remember to be honest.

But have you ever heard someone with a rich accent say the name Jim? Sounds like they are saying Jeam as in team.

Perhaps....the actual English pronunceation IS Lin-ux as in Lynn or Jim?

I guess we will never know.... :D

If it wasn't for a ^$*$^! power outtage last month that lasted longer than my UPS did, my syslog server would be showing an uptime of over 5 years! Talk about a reliable 486 class machine :)
