Hey guys I just got a 160g maxtor and I want to replace my 40 g western dig in my Dell. The op system is xp home service 1 however the hard drive is fat32 and the new 160 is NTFS how do i copy the 40gig to the 160gig do I convert the fat32 40 gig to ntfs then copy? If so how? I tried to copy the fat 32 40 gig and force it to the 160 gig ntfs but its not picking up all the files I know this is a easy one for you guys.

You probably need partition magic to do it.

yes -both drives need to be the same file system.

I have not used it in quite some time, but it's got a nice GUI you should understand.

im pretty sure that if you put in your windows xp disc like you are gonna reinstall the OS....you can convert the drive partition to NTFS....then do the copy

I know you can do it on Windows 2k Pro....I just dont remember if XP has that option...I think it does

If not go with partition magic like nopp suggested

ZT is correct. I do know myself that XP allows you to convert FAT32 to NTFS when it is first installed.

I remember on Win2k machines we used to run:

convert c: /fs:ntfs

The "convert" command should work. I think if you try to do it during Windows setup, it will format the drive as a NTFS drive, which wouldn't be good.

I remember on Win2k machines we used to run:

convert c: /fs:ntfs
that would be from the command prompt -if you try it from the run box it will just pop up the command prompt then close.

ok Guys heres the new question.

I converted to ntfs for the maxtor hard drive but even there text support couldnt get that junk running so I converted back to fat32 and went and bought a 160 western dig drive. Whats the best way to copy it so it will boot up on its own? I can copy my drive but then it wont boot up to windows on its own.

Thanks in advance

boot with your xp disc in.....and go to recovery

at the command line.....try typing in

fix mbr

this should repair your master boot record....that is IF that is what is causing it not to boot properly

you could also just get a ghosting software like norton or somethin....and ghost the drive...then reinstall the OS....and ghost back so all of your apps n drivers will not be disturbed

goodluck!

the easiest way is to use their utility to do it-then use partition magic to recover the extra space.

you need to format the new HDD to whatever the old HDD is then transfer all the data to the new HDD but i bought a new HDD and i didn't have to have them the same and it worked.
