I have a friend of mine that is on dial-up.....

It seems that he is able to dial up to his ISP but when he runs IE6...sometimes he is unable at first to access favourite web pages & then almost within seconds he is then disconnected from his ISP.

Have you any suggestions on the problem or any ideas as to what is causing that.

Thanks in advance.

I had picked up a trojan awhile back that did a denial of service attack as soon as I connected with IE. The cable modem showed as being online but I could'nt connect to my mail, the browser, msn...ect...once I found the trojan and removed it everything was fine. (sorry, I don't remember what it was called and I know there are more than one out there that do those attacks).

That "could" be the problem or it could be something in his dial up network settings...

seems kind of buggy to me if he's only getting disconnected after he pulls up IE....wish I had more suggestions but it's hard to guess without seeing it..I'm not a "super" techie like some around here.
:D :p

Try adding +ms=34,0 as an init string, if the modem doesn't respond when he tries to dial - remove it.

Also...
Listen to the connection, if the handshaking takes a while to complete then there is a definate line problem.
Check the phone cord connected to the computer, is it over 10 feet long? (too much line means too much impedence)
Are there any cordless phones on the line? (remove them for testing as they take twice the voltage off the line)
Are there any splitters on the line?

And...
Is it an old computer? Some older computers have a problem with winmodems. When he hits a certain page, the cpu gets tied up trying to process the information and forgets about the modem. The modem, thinking its been ignored, simply hangs up.
