View Full Version : the passion of the christ?
Has anyone gone to see this yet or will you?
I'm curious about everyone's opionion on this one.
They actually have the churches here open for counselling if you've seen it here and can't deal..bizzarre...
I myself havent seen it but from what I've heard the hype is all about the gore and graphic nature of the film. As for religion..it's a story. Someone took a story from the bible and did it hollywood style and now someone already rich will get richer...I KNEW I shoulda married Mel when he asked me....*sigh*

Have not seen it yet, and have never seen a movie get so much controversy.
I hope Mel got it right or the big guy upstairs is going to be ****ed.
I heard some interesting things on the radio this morning at work...havent looked anything up to verify, but scott and casey usually do their homework..
anyways..there was a woman in Texas last night who died of a heart attack during the crucification scene..then they went on to say that the guy who played Jesus was struck by lightening and the director was also struck by lightening during the making of the film..
They knew what they were doing when they decided to make a movie on this subject...just too many different views and opinions and what not...it still all comes down to cold hard cash in my opinion :D

I have heard from several sources that it is not historicly correct, unless you are catholic ;) .

Mel is not trying to hide that it is the perception of his catholic upbringing. He's on the cover of Catholic Diegest this month and they interview him.
I saw it on Wednesday and thought it was wonderfully done. I'm not religious at all, but I do have an strong knowledge of the Holy Bible, and I attend church, mostly for my girlfriend's sake, but also because I find it better to intelligently disagree than to just disagree.
Anyways, there are definitely some Catholic influences in the film, but WTF -- every relgion's beliefs and interpretations are different -- some slightly, some not so slight. It would be impossible to make it ambiguous enough to cover all denominations.
I think there was a huge use of symbolism in the film to compensate for that fact. There were a number of oddities throughout the entire movie that I still don't quite get (and probably never will). Others may see them right away and say, "Hey, that must be representing Judas's curse and blah, blah, etc." So in that aspect, I think everyone can feel like the movie appeals to their beliefs.
Overall, I liked it. I think I may have been the only person in the theatre who wasn't crying the whole time, but that to me shows just how powerful this film really is.
One note, though. I heard over and over again about how brutal and bloody this film was before I saw it. And I must admit, I was STILL shocked at how bloody it was. It should be renamed, "The Flogging of Christ" because more than half of the movie just showed the poor guy getting whipped over and over again. Just be prepared -- it's very gruesome. I know that was his sacrifice, and every drop of his blood was for "us", but just be warned -- they show a lot of it.

I have not seen it but would like to...just because of all the controversy behind it.
