Put another known good mouse on it and see if the problem goes away.
If it don't it could be an internal problem.

Are you sure the have the most recent driver for your mouse installed?

try a optical mouse to rule out the pinch rollers

Doesn't sound like the mouse to me. Sounds like some other program is eating your CPU resources and your computer can't process fast enough to keep up with your mouse movements, thus only redrawing it every so often and making it look like it's jumping around. After awhile, your message queue will be so overloaded that your computer will appear frozen.

Bond the computer isn't freezing up, it is just the mouse.

I have to get another mouse to check.

I am using this mouse on a laptop that pointer would float around so I disabled it in the bios almost a year ago.

Thanks for the help

if a virus were running in the background it would cause that problem too.

Ya know that Xp is known to load a pointer driver on start up.
use msconfig and go to the start up tab to check.
I have had this problem before and disabling this took care of it.
