Just a quick question to see if any testing has been done with vBulletin 4 yet? Will vBPicGallery work or will we have wait for an update?

Well, I don't have vB 4 if that gives you a clue.

I'll see what it's gonna take to give you the proper updates.

Nope, just checked. I won't be able to test code in beta. File a complaint at vBulletin.com. They have not been very helpful so far though.

vB 4 is in closed beta. If you didn't apply for beta access six months ago, you won't have access to it until it goes gold. Don't blame me, I'm just the messenger, I'm not on the vB team.

But has anybody noticed how bad the new style is on the eyes? I can't spend more than about 10 minutes on the site before I start to get a headache. I know the new code is css based and should allow us to easily adjust the contrast so that it's easier to view... but if vBulletin doesn't give us some options on style selections on their own site, I don't know how I'm going to be able to keep up with the topics there. I just can't stare at that site for the amount of time it takes to go through 300+ messages per day without my eyeballs boiling out of my head. Might as well be staring into a microwave running at full power with the door open.

It's probably on purpose. There's been so much griping over there over the last few months due to lack of communication and the rediculous pre-release purchase that membership complaints have reached a boil. Maybe they don't want us on the site for the time being.

Looks like SMF. I hate it.

Sorry to hijack thread- Anyone have any updates on if this is working on VB4?

Well they finally went public with beta on vb4, and now it's in something like RC4, and they've set a release date for Monday (Dec 21). My advice from what I've seen is to stay far, far away from the initial gold release of vB4. It's nowhere near ready, and they're rushing this release for some reason that no sane person can figure out.

CSS doesn't even validate on their own site yet. Their main page throws up over 600 CSS validation errors, enough to cause any spider to give up and go away without indexing any content. Yet they want to shove it down our throats right before Christmas when we'd much rather be spending time with our families rather than listening to the screams and wails of clients who need help because their sites got broken when they tried to update to this half baked software.

I can't speak for Greg, but if vbPicGallery was my project, I'd be telling people not to expect anything out of me until vB4 gets stable, and my guess would be it'll be March before things settle down. I've already told all of my clients not to even think about upgrading their sites yet, and if they do they're on their own because I'm not gonna get burned trying to pull their butts out of the fire.

I not prepared to match their release date with vBPicGallery. I found the GOld release date a bit unrealistic.

But as I have said in the past, vBulletin appears to make most of their money at christmas when little kids get money and open forums that last about as long as vacation. I think the are out to collect that money from the kids still.

None of my customers are requesting upgrades to vB4. In fact I have been told by some they are not considering it at all at this time.

GOld release is out!

Turns out that vBulletin 4 is so unique and rewritten, it has the same security issues and previous versions. So, vBulletin 4 PL1 is out already.

Oh well, at least they can get their Christmas income from the kiddies. What a poor statement about the management, marketing and programming of vBulletin.

While I see many things in there that are very good progress, the rush to release of vB 4 as a half baked project is not encouraging.

Hi Greg,

We've upgraded to VB4 because we need the blog feature, not because we're kiddies lol. Anyway, can you give us a timeframe on when we can get support for VB4?

I don't think it will need that much support because much of it is already working. I'd be happy to let you use my forum as a test since you wisely don't have it.

Thanks

I'm not labeling anyone. But there is a lot of money in the kiddie market.

Anyway, I do have vBulletin 4, but my consulting work has kept me from doing the recodes of my vB3x software.

If you have an issue you think is fixable, let us know and we'll see what we can do.

Would like to see VBPicGal on 4.x cuz I'd hate to uninstall it and let it go by the wayside with all the images that are already in there.

I'm almost done setting up VB4 on my site and yes it is a frustrating process, especially if you're doing it from 4.0.0. They just released 4.0.1 which is supposed to fix over 200 bugs (ZOIKES!) and claim to have .0.2 coming along soon with another 100 or so bugs.

Upshot is my website traffic has increased about 30% right off the bat. Bounce rate has halved, and users stay on the site over 200%longer. Registrations have increased about 30% and I'm scheduled to hit my first million hits/month mark by the end of this month.

Frustrating? Yes. Worth it? Sure is... at least for me anyway. :)

YMMV,
CC

I'm not going to lie about being disappointed with the way support for v4 is going. This is infuriating that we are not getting support, or even updates from you, for a product that we paid for.

It seems as though because you don't like v4 that you are just throwing this on the back burner. Well that's not really going to cut it for lots of your customers who have already upgraded or are stuck waiting to upgrade based on your product not being compatible with v4.

So what is it going to be? Are we going to get a version compatible with v4? If so what is your time-line for it? Or is this just falling on deaf ears. I would like to know asap because if that's the case then I will take my business elsewhere.

Where "elsewhere" do you plan on taking your business? Nobody of any significance is porting much of anything to vB4 at this point because it's still considered by everybody who codes to be unstable and at best still "beta" software.

If you have a gripe, first take it up with vBulletin for releasing substandard software as gold in the first place, then look in the mirror and scream loud and hard at the reflection you see for jumping to upgrade to software that wasn't ready for prime time. There were a million warning signs all over the net. The only people that suggested you upgrade to vB4 was vB. Everybody else said "wait".

Greg's products are still supported for the version they were designed for and that you paid for. Once vB4 becomes a stable, reliable product I'm sure these products will be ported over. But not before then. vBulletin is re-writing routines at a furious pace right now, and every routine that they re-write necessitates a re-write in the plugins. Nobody in their right mind is going to spend any significant time porting a plugin to work with a version that is going to change significantly and require another re-write a week or two from now.

For your information I have NOT upgraded to vb4. Maybe my words were a bit harsh and chosen incorrectly.

Whew. Glad to hear that. Believe me, I have several clients screaming across the mountain tops wanting to upgrade to 4... most of them with ten or more plugins, and they can't seem to understand that upgrading to 4 is going to break their board. I hate to tell them that I can't/won't do it for them at this point, because it's lost money to not provide the services they're asking for... but it's simply not possible.

It's funny that board users are completely oblivious to what's going on, and I haven't heard a peep out of any regular users wanting upgrades... it's just the owners that are getting impatient. Just try to be patient and let the natural progression work. Once 4 gets stable... I'd guess within two more point releases or so... maybe one if we're lucky... then you can bet that the coders will start porting their mods and we can get back to the business of regular upgrades and bettering the sites.

Getting latest version of V4 up and running on a development server, preparatory to using it in production ...

As a current customer of both vBPicgallery and vBnewsletter, any further word on porting them over?

I'd like to keep using vBPicgallery as it's proved popular amongst our members.

Thanks ...

Regards,
Doug
