still having the same problems,,i installed a pcmcia card on it for the modem,,though it recognizes that its there,,it just wont work,,cant communicate with AOHell,,so i tried to hook up to my desktop via a nulmodem adapter to transfer files (to avoid burning cd's being i only have a cd rom on the laptop,,no floppy)and it doesnt recognize com1,,,i tried all the coms,,( it does have an ir thingy on it)

it has a fresh version of 98se on it,,i installed it myself,,was told something about th bios being executed off the hard drive,,and was wondering if when i formatted the harddrive if i lost something that i needed,,

any ideas??

ah, the fresh install of win98 is probably your problem.

I would seriously recomend the original install or "recovery disk" to set up the drivers and os.

Search the compaq site on your part number and possibly the serial number for the proper drivers.

yes -sounds like you did not install the drivers(or not the correct ones).

Heres your first problem:
communicate with AOHell

Heres your second problem:
it has a fresh version of 98se on it

Ditch AOHell and 98se and get yourself a real internet provider and OS (think XP)

there is no way winxp will run on a old laptop.the minimum is a 400mhz with 96 megs of ram -and even at that a lot of stuff is disabled.(I have installed it on a 333 but it ran like total crap )stick with win98 but get the correct drivers for everything.

i have to disagree Dave

i installed xp pro on my old thinkpad 600 that I sold my aunt

i was totally wary about doing it because it was a P2 233...but on IBM's site they reported that it could run on it

sooooooooo..i took the leap and installed it.....it runs like a champ....only thing is the ole stinkpad only has like a lil over 2 gig of HD in it....so there wasnt room for much of anything else once the OS was on it

as far as any other mfgr of laptops....i cant or wont go out on a limb and say it will perform as well as it does on a thinkpad600

just a FYI

ssssssssssssBANG!

it will instaqll on some lesser computers but a lot of the features you would upgrade for do not work.the recomended system requirements are a 400 with 96 megs of ram -it will install down to a 200 P2 with 64 megs but I wouldn't do it.I find old laptops do best with win98, but it is up to the owner to decide for themselves ;)
