so how was this done?I know it is compression but that is a lot to fit in a 64k file!

damn, I miss my demo days! I used to do these types of demos, back in the DOS days. Before accellerated 3D cards and common audio/video API's. It was a lot of fun then, wish I still had the time to do it today. With the hardware out there now, some truely amazing stuff can be done.

As for how it's done, there is a lot of compression involved. But most of the textures are small, and relatively low resolution, just high enough to look good for it's use. Then the underlying gemoetry will compress quite well, and much of it can even be generated algorithmically. The math they show for the overall size is misleading, since a single 1K object could be replicated several thousand times, in effect expanding it's size to be several megbytes in size.

It is an impressive demo. Check out www.scene.org for the past present, and future of the demo scene. You will find some truely talented people there, and their works.
