Laptop connection problem with Printer

I have a new Compaq laptop.I am trying to connect printer to the laptop and installed the printer driver. When I do a simple test ptrint, I get an error message,error name is laptop can not communicate with the printer.The Printer cable is in the USB port but I am not getting what is the problem. Please give me the suggestion.

try unpluging the usb cable from the pc and then reconnecting. That helps me sometimes with my lexmark printer.

What operating system do you have? Do you have the correct and most recent drivers/software.
You may want to setup the printer using local port first and then re-map to
the XP. This search result may help.
