i got a laptop and 2 wireless cards....i was wondering if there was a way that i could make my laptop appear as a wireless access point....

you will still need to be able to route...i dont think you can emulate the routing with the laptop and a wireless card
but im soo skeptical about wireless anything that i never spent any time looking into anything of the nature
maybe someone else here has more input

well, one card i pulled out of an access point....and i know that you can make a computer a router with wired ethernet.....so i assume there's a way to do it wirelessly......

you would do it the same way -but you will need 2 network cards in the laptop(one built in and one wireless-or one in each pcmcia slot)with windows 98 and up you can use internet connection sharing(you will have to assign ip addresses)-but if you use server 2000 or 2003 then you can turn on the DHCP and NAT functions and not have to assign addresses.

put 2 network adapters in -then decide wich one will connect to the broadband connection.leave its settings on automatic-connect the internet and be sure it is working.then connect the other NIC to the other computer via a crossover cable(it is important to use a crossover cable ,not a patch cable unless there is a hub between them)
at this point you can do it 2 ways-use the network wizzard(this is the easiest way)on the laptop choose it connects directly to the net and others connect through it-and when it is done choose to make a floppy disk -then take that disk over to the second one and run the exe file on it.
the second way is to set the ip address on the second NIC to 192.168.0.1 and the subnet to 255.255.255.0 -make sure that both are on the same workgroup(you can use WORKGROUP)and keep in mind that it is case sensitive and each has a unique name.then turn on sharing (from the network settings)and share the internet connection.now go to the other computer -set its ip to 192.168.0.2 subnet 255.255.255.0 -go to the internet properties and click the connections tab-make sure the mark is in never dial a connection under lan settings(button below )put a check in automaticly detect settings-ok out and you should be good to go.
hope that helps.

like how do i set up a wireless router using my laptop and 2 wireless cards?

same process just skip the cable on the wireless card -but if you are talking about using 2 wireless cards it would be harder because you cant make 2 cards see each other without a hub(in a wired situation you can use a crossover cable-but wireless there is no way to make the signal shake hands.)not to mention it would be around the same price and a whole lot easier to use a wifi router(though I do understand you already have 2 wifi cards).(if the wifi routers are still expensive in canada let me know and I will hook ya up)

dave...thats what i thought he meant when i first replied
2 wireless cards....which i didnt know the answer to because of not implementing the crossover cabling

i would have used a hub, but i'm already carrying around a laptop...one card is straight out of an access point, so i'm assuming it can handle multiple connections....i think it's just a question of software....

it is not a software issue -without a hub the cards will never see each other.in a wired network a crossover cable would allow the cards to see each other-but wireless it cant do that -thus the need for a access point or router.

the question now is where do i get my hands on this....

by my interpretation....its not gonna be available "on the shelf" as a stand alone...but packaged with hardware
doesnt really matter....cuz PCTEL's reputation, with me anyway, is MUD....because their v90 SOFTmodems really REALLY REAAAALLLY SUCKED!
but who knows...maybe they will do better with this venture?
goodluck!
