My computer will only defragment 10% and then starts over. What to do or try next?

Disable all background programs and turn off your screen saver. That should do it.

Also, try using it in Safe Mode.

Sometimes if you're HD or if you partition your HD...partition is full, this can happen. Defragging takes disk space and if there isn't enough room for this to happen, it will start the process and then abort it.

and as nopid said -if you dont disable the screensaver it will restart also-also keep in mind if it finds errors it may restart at each error-but should make it past that point on the next run.

Thanks, Noppid, Bond, RacinRN and Dave. After turning off the screen saver and trying again, there were some errors on the disk that needed "fixin". After that, it worked just fine. Thanks for your help.

Glad things worked out for you. Thanks for coming by lakecs.com. Feel free to hang out more often in our general forums.

You brought up a good point...my server OS teacher system just reviewed some basic tips with us and reminded us to always run Scan Disk before you defrag. Even I get sloppy with running Scan Disk and it's a good tip to remember.

Glad it worked for ya. :)

Just get Diskeeper (http://www.executive.com) -- it doesn't restart when it hits open files, like other defraggers do.
