I want a simple version of Linux Live, just so I can do experiments, and play around with Linux.

I tried Ubuntu, but my poor old notebook can't even load the Kernel:eek:

Is there any Linux that my poor old notebook can run?

I once heard of something call Puppy Linux Live, which is like a sample of linux live designed for demoing Linux. Any clue where I can get this?

Thanks!

get DSL (Damn Small Linux). Or any other distros biz card install

Just remember that if you have to find an old enough distro that will work on antiquated equipment....most likely you will get discouraged at using Linux.

The newer distros are A LOT more user friendly than the older ones.

My Note book has a a 1.5Ghz Celeron M, and a crappy intel chipset.

All I need is a version of Linux that I can use to browse the web, run low end apps, and put my wireless card in monitor mode.

I will look up DSL, sounds like that's what I'm looking for.

The laptop should be fine for even ubuntu....so if its not booting its prolly not liking one of your periphials.

I know Ubuntu doesnt like Liteon drives...so try something else like Fedora Core or even OpenSUSE.

I would do some research on which distro is easiest to get wireless networking going...since you are wanting to browse and use wireless.

I got ubuntu to load, there must have been something wrong with the first CD I was trying to use.

It loads the ubuntu kernel fine, though now I'm getting a device I/O error, any clue what that's about? I don't have any hardware installed, besides the standard integrated things.

NES, as ZT said Wireless is hit and miss, pretty much in all Distros. I've found that Ubuntu is the most user friendly when it comes to wireless. I'd put my money on your wireless card causing the I/O error.

BTW with such low specs you might want to try xUbuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/) it uses a lighter desktop environment called XFCE

Thanks guys for the help, I have latest release of KNOPPIX running great, it even automatically detected my PCMICIA SD reader. It's really nice, it'll boot in about two minutes and I don't have to manually install the PCMICIA card.

I have yet to find a computer that Knoppix will not load on. And there are so many specialized Knoppix distros, you can find one for almost any purpose.
