I just bought a new laptop (Vista Home Prem) and trying to add it to my XP Pro network. I changed the laptop to the same workgroup and I can connect to the internet via my wireless router. I've tried everything I can think of but can't see the shared printers I have on my XP machine nor see either XP pc on the network.

My main PC is a XP Pro desktop which is hosting two printers. I also have my older laptop (win XP Pro) which has no problem accessing the other XP machine and printers. From both XP's I can see the Vista laptop but can't access it, while the vista cannot see the others at all.

Any suggestions?

Try sharing a folder on the laptop and try again. If that doesn't work, it's more than likely a firewall setting. Let us know.

After much searching and experimenting I finally got XP and Vista talking to each other. One of the key settings that had to be altered was switching the Vista machine from a public to private setting within networking.

I will put together a list of all the not-so intuitive steps to share with others. On top of the problem sharing files I also encountered a print sharing problem that required an old school workaround that reminded me of the old Windows 3.11 days. Leave it to Microsoft to take one step forward and 3 steps back.
