HD on my sons computer took a crap so I replaced it but having a hell of a problem installing XP. Installed the HD, set it to master hooked up ribbon & power cables. Set it to boot from CD, so far so good. I see message examining your system, then I get to the Windows set up screen. At the bottom of the screen where it shows the files its loading, where it usually goes so fast you can't really read them, it's moving at a snails pace. Looked at Setup is loading Kernel Debugger Dll for at leats 10 minutes. Next it's at loading files Windows Setuip. I'm sure I hooked the new drive up just like the old one was. Any ideas?

Is the bios set to autodetect the HDD? If not the geometry may be set wrong causing it to have to work extra hard to correct errors as it goes along

Sometimes the add in cards like a sound card and modem and things like that can interfere with the setup of XP. Try removing all the add in cards except for the video card (if you have one) and try it again.

Tried both ways with the bios, auto and manual still no go. Will remove all the extra cards tomorrow and try it again. Question about auto detect. Does it recognize the brand and size of the HD? On this it only shows size.

I got it!!!. Someone else suggested changing cables, maybe cd drive so I had a spare drive here, swapped it out and good to go. Just assumed it worked correctly or didn't work at all. Thx for the help guys.

Glad you got it. I should've known. I just went through that same thing. The answer to your question is yes, the bios should recognize the size and brand of the drive when in auto detect. If not that usually means either the cable is bad or the drive. LOL A day late and a dollar short.
