I haven't ever backed up a DVD. I would like to know the best procedure for doing this with my current setup.

I do not have a DVD burner. I'm currently using a laptop with a dvd/cd rw combo drive.

I would like to backup the DVD with the best video/audio quality possible onto regular cdr's.

Again, I only have the combo drive, so I will need to put the DVD onto the hard drive first, then burn to cd.

Thanks in advance.

J/C, actually you are not giving us enough info, sounds like you want to make a vcd from a dvd? I would be glad to help--Dave420 could probably be the most help, he has this stuff down!

lol-I do a lot of copies and would be glad to help out.first thing is to get some software -a lot of it can be had for free(freeware)-I will get a list together for you and post it later today(I would rather post it here then in PM or IM so it can help others).then if we need to fine tune anything we can chat on IM.

awesome tyvm. My only request in this pursuit, I'd like the quality of the copy to be as close as possible to the original.

then you want to make svcd's -it usually takes 3 to get the whole movie in.

3 hmm then how do you break it into 3 and for the kids movies, I'd like to keep them to one disk...even at a loss of quality.

even at VCD..it would be hard to get it all on one disc

one cd will hold 1 hour (roughly) of video at medium quality.when you go to higher quality it is less compressed so it is huge -at $175 you may want to consider upgrading to a duel format dvd recorder (+/_)

best program for copying DVD's is DVD X Copy Xpress it can fit a
DVD 9 on one DVD-R

If you want to learn to rip and make copies with freeware go to afterdawn.com there are free guides there to rip a DVD and free software downloads as well. Look for DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink they are pretty much all you need if doing it freeware.
However if you want 0 headaches and doing a DVD copy with just a few mouse clicks then you need DVD Copy Xpress a killer program it rips to your hard drive and then records to your DVD media there are burners around now right at the $100 range

but remember DVD xcopy xpress does put the "Warning Backup"screen at the begining and you can not copy a copy made with xpress.

Of course I remember that you can't make a copy of a copy with DVD Copy Xpress, I was amoung the first customers for DVD X Copy and get free upgrades and got free X Press and Platinum for life. So I know more then a little about these programs
I have np with what it does, since I don't need more then 1 backup copy

Pinnacle is also a good copying program, I have used a lot of them(copy software) and most do what you need them for. For the most part I still use freeware methods because I like the control I have over the finished product.
Also remember it is only legal to back-up discs you already own.;)

Hey dave just trying to help him/her? since freeware was not specfied there on that first post.

I like DVD Xpress copy since it's just a few clicks of the mouse
negligable learning curve and I can just go read, watch tv ect and everything os pretty much done for me with great copies every time on my rig.

Nothing wrong with the freeware I cut my teeth on it, I just like not haseling with it anymore.

And this is a real plus I have seen DVD burners that will use all formats for under $200 now and DVD burners that will do both DVD+ and DVD-R formats for under $120 a great time for multimedia one day I'll find the energy to do all the old family films on DVD
