I'm replacing a power supply for some friends on a HP Pavilion 8390. There is a small 4 pin female plug that comes directly out of the supply and hooks to the sound card. When looking on the internet for a replacement power supply they mention the 4 pin plug but are calling it a video connection. Is this correct?? Here is the link to the one I'm looking at if you want to see what I'm talking about.

Are you sure it comes out of the power supply and plugs into the sound card?
Ive never seen that before...but I have never put in a high end sound card either. Can only imagine that if it really exists...that there must be some kind of amplifier on the soundcard that needs the extra power.

Yes it is the sound card, I just looked. It is a older Pentium 2 system. There is also a wire that goes from the sound card to the DVD drive. And also one form the sound card to the modem. The back of the sound card has a headphone, a speaker jack, a 15 pin female jack that looks like a video jack only bigger and also a round jack that looks similar to a ps2 jack. Where the 4pin plug wire from the power supply plugs in on the soundcard one pin side says +12 and on the other pin side it says -12. I checked the computer store and none of the standard power supplies have this 4 pin plug. Thanks!!

Be nice to see pictures of this. But sounds like its a high end soundblaster card.
I have never known a power supply to be made that has a particular sound card adapter plug built in. Saying that...I would think that there is a harness plug that just plugs into one of the outputs of the powersupply. Trace the wiring to be sure it doesnt do just that...and if it does then you can just connect it to the new one.
Again...posting a picture or two would be best to get the most help on this unique setup.

It's probably to supply power to a hard drive or a floppy drive. I've seen old sound cards with ide controllers attached to them. If you have a bunch of pins sticking out of the sound card more than likely that's what it is. If your old power supply still works at all, try unplugging that 4 pin connector and see if everything still works. If it does then you don't have to worry about it.
Unless you can find a used one somewhere, you're not gonna be able to find one with that specific connector. I'd think about replacing the sound card as well.

The old power supply was a LiteOn brand model #PS-5151-2H3. Found a replacement one here. So hopefully it will work. If I get a chance I still will snap a few photos. Thanks very much!!

Here are the pictures.
#1 The power supply 4 pin female plug, as you can see it comes directly out of the supply.
#2 The sound card showing where the 4 pin plug connects(to the white connection)
#3 The sound cards external view.

Ok....the pics did help.
Any new power supply will have that plug. Its called a Berg connector. Its also used to power small form factor devices like a 3.5 floppy.
