HELP!!!
I bought a new computer with a dvd/cd-rw combo drive. It originally did not register the drive at all I but got that part figured out. Now, however, when I put a cd in the light goes on, you can hear it running, but it does not recognize that there is a cd in it. When I go to media player to start it manually, it says I must have a cd in the drive.
I really dont feel like packing this up and paying for shipping back or driving 3 hours to return it... any suggestions?

Go to My Computer > right click on the Device C/d DVD or whatever designation it has like drive d and try to either run the prog or open the CD /DVD .

Tried that... get the "put a cd in" message.
This pc was sealed in the box and opened yesterday.. it still hasn't been connected to the net. I would like to think that it's something simple that my computer illiterate brain just can't figure out...LOL

Most likely a driver is missing or corrupted. Go into device manager and check for the existence of a yellow exclamation point beside the dvd drive in the list. If you have that, then figure out who the manufacturer of the disk drive is, and download the appropriate drivers from the net. Delete the DVD drive from the list, re-boot, and when Windows detects the new hardware, use the driver you downloaded from the net to install the DVD drive. If none of this works or you don't have the exclamation point, then you most likely have a DOA DVD drive.

This is maybe too obvious but
You have tried more than one CD haven't you as the CD may be corupt or protected if you have not tried another cd then do so .

Probably, but I've been out of the game for awhile, and needed practice.
