After finally successfully removing the systems.exe virus and installing symantec anti virus, my presario2500 notebook(3ghz windowsXP 512 ram 40gigHD)now shows the following message at startup:
"windows product activation"
a problem has prevented windows from accurately checking the status of the license for theis computer. To proceed your copy of windows must be activated with microsoft. Do you want to activate windows now?

Responding with either yes or no gets a screen with "user" as the only thing showing to click. Clicking on it, it says "loading personal settings" then almost imediately the same "windows product activation" message comes back. There seems no way to get beyond this circle. Before removing the virus I never logged in as a user or administrator, the computer just booted up and was ready to go for anyone who turned it on. I'm at sea and do not have the original xp cd with me.

The computer is presently completely unusable. System resore was disabled during virus removal.
Any ideas?
Thanks

That's a tough one. If you click yes you should go to the activation screen. You say it's a laptop? did you upgrade to XP?

You shouldn't have to activate an OS on a bought laptop, unless you bought a copy of XP to upgrade it or reinstall.
