I have a laptop compaq presario v4435nr with xp home and it has two memory slots each has 256 in it now can I remove one 256 and add a 512.Thanks for any help

You probably could but I wouldnt advise it. I always match the RAM in brand and size for maximum performance.

The only reason I can think of that you might want to do that is to up the total amount of memory. If you are wanting to remove the two 256k sticks and replace them with two 512 sticks in order to double your amount of ram... the answer to your question is "maybe".

You need to check the specs on your system and see if it will accept larger chips. Most likely it will... but even if it does, you should follow Zero's advice and ensure that the chips are matched and that the timing matches something that your motherboard can handle.

Thanks for the reply I was able to get to compaq tech support and my computer is able to handle up to 2 gig of ram somebody gave me 512 same type I have now and they said it will work just fine with the 256 and the 512 but thanks very much for all the info.
