I have a small home network right now. I am thinking of adding wireless networking capabilities for three of my five computers, but....

I use (or more correctly stated, my kids use) the network mostly for gaming and I have heard that wireless stuff (even the newer stuff) is still kind of slow and problematic for gaming.

I have also heard that I would either have to replace my router with a wireless router or purchase a device called a wireless access point to add wireless to my wired network. My preferred setup would be to leave two of my computers wired (for speed) and set up the other three (my kids computers) for wireless so I don't have wires running through my house anymore. (My attic access sucks or I would have just wired the jacks myself and skipped the whole wireless thing).

Do any of you all have any real world experience with any of this wireless networking stuff? What do I need to buy, what protocol or protocols should I look for, is this all a waste of time for my planned use?

Any info, help, or advice would be greatly appreciated. :D

Thanks All,

Mojo_Joe

I believe that you should be looking for the 'g' standard. The person that you really need to talk to is Zero Tolerance. He is outta town till after the holiday.

for speed you definatly want a g router-all wireless routers also have a 4 port wired switch built in -so mixing wired and wireless is not a problem.but remember to get the extra speed from the wireless g router you must use the same brand nics and router(mixed brands will work but they will not be as fast)

And dont mix the standards...if you mix 11g with 11b...the result will be 10MBPS...if I am using straight 11g...I am getting @ 28MBPS...nowhere near the liosted 54MBPS but a vast improvement over the 11b.
