Most likely a low memory issue, or a corruption in your swap file that's causing your system to take a dump on you. Here's an easy thing to try, it may not fix it, but it wont hurt to try. Set your swap file to be managed by you, not by windows, and set it to about three times the amount of physical memory you have in the system. Re-boot and start loading the system. If that doesn't work for you, or you are unsure about how to accomplish this, post back and somebody will give you more details.

I hope you're using XP, because if you're not, none of this info counts.

Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Advanced. Then click on Performance Settings, and then Advanced again, and then click on Virtual Memory, then Change. Tell the system to use a Custom Size, and set the size somewhere around three times the size of your physical memory if your HDD will support that.

A defrag of the hard drive would be a good idea at this point, to give Windows a clean straight stretch of HDD space to use for the virtual memory. You can do a defrag from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter. Select the volume that you've chosen as your swap space, and defrag it. It's a good idea to go ahead and defrag all your volumes while your at it... and it won't hurt to plan a regular schedule for defragging.
