So....help?

Long story short, I was given a old computer [1 gig, 512 ram...windows ME] and I've just been using it as a putz around computer.

Yesterday for some reason the windows update ran [against my commends] and because no one was near the computer it ran all the updates and then upon a reboot they were applied.

Now the issue...it installed "updated" drivers for my display/video and it seems they were for...the wrong video card. Needless to say this is bad now that they are applied.

Now upon a reboot it gives me an error message and then promptly goes to a black screen with a non-responsive cursor...think dos mode but your unable to type. this happens after about six seconds of time off of the error message.

Now I can boot into "safe mode" and do limited things for an unlimited time, but a system restore does work...and I cannot access a cd or thumb drive or the internet. I can get into the BIOS as well as the safe mode.

Now the sticky part, I am unsure what video card I have. I know its a Nvidia Gforce something, but I am unsure if its a gforce2 or what not...also I do not have drivers for it.

So....help?

Heres my basic questions....

How can I fix this?

How can I get my video card model type so i can find drivers for it?

How can I fix this?

How can I get this fixed if I have new drivers?

Can you help me?

If I'm pretty much screwed...at the very least tell me how I can make the computer more then a "safe mode" paper weight...IE a full disk wipe/reformat and updated OS type of deal....I do have XP and I have been wanting to do an upgrade [yes the computer can handle it] but I havent had a good reason to do so...and now if I could get things done easier I am MORE then willing to do a wipe and then install XP to fix things, but I believe that even if I do a wipe and install the drivers for the card will not be found leaaving me even further stuck then I am already.

Thanks in advance.

do a full format in the xp install when xp is loaded and running get internet going. get into device manager through my computer get into the properties of the display device and update drivers for the vid card .if that doesnt work then shut down computer. find out the model of the vid card look inside the case. if the sound card is on board and if you dont have the mobo drivers look up the model # of the motherboard. then go the website of the company and download the drives and load them

boot in safe mode and access the device manager. uninstall the drivers for your graphics card and reboot. once you do, windows should install generic drivers for your adapter allowing you to have functional video. go to nvidia.com and download the latest ME drivers for geforce cards - they all use the same detonator drivers. good luck.

btw, to upgrade to windows xp you need at least 1.5GB HD space...so the computer's specs may be able to handle xp, but you won't have room (unless 1 gig was a typo or in reference to something other than hard drive space.)
