I needed an easy to use shoutbox for my forums and created Quick ShoutBox.
It's based on a semi hidden forum with one thread in it. Posting is enabled, but starting new threads is disabled. File uploads are off and so are image tags. BB codes and Smilies are enabled.
There is one hook and one template edit and the shout box is live. The shout box will display the last post in the thread. Take a look.
