Just thought I would toss this link out there, Ubuntu is giving away free copies of their OS on physical media! I got myself one of each, 32bit, 64bit and PPC, and MAC versions!

I'm getting one and installing it tonight for the hell of it.

I'm going to try it on a 1000MHz Computer. The purpose will be just to review it. If it works, I may set up a linux firewall and local http, ftp, shh, mysql server. This will be a test from an admin perspective.

If the GUI us good, I'll setup an 1800MHz AMD system for my kids and see if it works out. This will be an end user test that my wife will use as well.

I am posting this via umbutu 5.4. I am booted off the Live CD. It has detected all of the computers devices. Sound works and the video is 1024x768 it seems.

First impression is good from this Live cd. I will install umbutu on my old fedora core computer now and see what the result is.

Well I got it Ubunto 5.4 loaded on my old 1000Mhz AMD system. The sound, video and LAN worked fisrt try. The install had one error and a go back and retry recovered it. I think it was dirt in the CDROM. If you had seen the cleaning I had to give this machine to use it, you would have been surprised it worked at all.

I have alot to play with yet, but out of the box, this works and anyone could have installed it IMO.

More reviews to come soon.

I have Ubunto live CD, don't play around with it much. I am getting ready to build a linux box out of a old p2 333 system. Going to try to put the current distro of mandriva on it....we will see if the system can handle it.

I've been running Ubuntu Dapper Drake since April. It's runs great on this only P4 1.7 Ghz with 512 MB of RAM. I've completely replaced windows. :)

I just installed ubuntu 6.06 (Desktop) install as well as (LAMP server) install on two boxes.

Both boxes are identical ASUS A8V-MX (socket 939 AMD-64) driven mobos with the dreaded vt8251 chipsets (well I shouldnt say "dreaded"...but there is little support in the linux world for this chipset). Both boxes are runing SATA2 250gig hard drives and both installs went perfectly well with no errors.

I have to say that I like the GUI installer of the Desktop version probably better than anything I have tried thus far with linux. And the server version with the built in LAMP install is a GREAT ammenity.

Overall I have only been running these 2 boxes for less than a day...so everything could turn to crap at the drop of a hat..however I dont expect that, but if it does...I will be sure to update this thread.

:D

Glad to hear it went smoothly. I've had issues with the installer freezing on lower memory systems but besides that its always worked perfectly for me.

You should check out the latest one Ubuntu Edgy Eft (http://www.ubuntu.com/news/EdgyBeta) it's supposed to be released later this month.

Upgrading is really easy, run from terminal:

sudo update-manager -c -d

It's about a 200MB download

I might just do that. I am running the stable version of the server edition since its in a production environment.

I've got a bunch of copies of 6.06 LTS sitting on my desk, and I've been trying to back up my old desktop box for the last few hours so I can install it. But it's not cooperating... keeps locking up or rebooting.

I love Windows. ;-)
