It can be done through a hook. In fact I coded an app yesterday that uses the JS from external.php to make a windows vista gadget for my motorcycle forum and came to the same conclusion you have here. So, when I get back from the beach in few days, I'll post code for a hook when I figure it out.

Yeah, sorry I forgot to post, but I did check this out. It looks like there would need to be an entirely new query. I was disappointed and didn't pursue it any further.
