How do you install a memory chip?

I need more memory & I'm completely ignorant on what to get & how to install it. I've heard it's easy, but....nothing is that easy for me! I have an HP Pavilion 6745C & am running Windows ME. I want the best performing brand with at least 256 mb of SDRAM. HP informed me that these are compatible, SDRAM, 100 MHZ, INTEL PEC SDRAM UNBUFFERED DIMM SPEC., REVISION 1.0 COMPLIANT. That's all gibberish to me! And where do you buy this stuff. Do local computer stores carry memory chips?
