i really hope someone can help me here, because im lost... i reformatted my computer a while ago, about a month or so, and afterwards, i realized i can no longer listen to streaming media, such as radio broadcasts. whenever i try, i right click, and there is an error analysis that says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:")." im not exactly sure what that means, but i clicked the help thing, and it sent me to tools>options>network and it made me click all the boxes (only boxes i found were multicast, udp, tcp and http, and they were already checked anyways) and it hasnt solved anything... if someone could help me out itd be really appreciated
I'm not a multimedia guy myself and it's the middle of the night for most of our support members. Hang tight, someone will come along and help ya out.

I run an internet radio station.
Go here http://www.supertraxxradio.com and go to my downloads area(you will have to register of course...but its free) and grab "Screamer".
Try using that app to listen to your streams with....you can type in the url or you can set it in your defaults to play all .pls or .mp3 files automatically.
There is also winamp or musicmatch jukebox. However I recommend Screamer Radio because of its small footprint and low resources.
If a 3rd party app doesnt allow you to listen...report back here in the thread and we will help you troubleshoot further. I am betting that it is a windows media player problem....which IMO WMP sux to start with!
goodluck!

ok....at least we have something to start with.
try pinging the server you are trying to connect to.
To ping....go to a command prompt and type in
ping www.whateversite.com or ping "IPaddyofserverhere" (without the quotes of course)....let us know if you get a ping response and we will go from there.
My point is to see if your computer will even ping these types of sites or not and if not...we need to find out why.

well, i tried, and this is what i got "Ping statistics for 66.244.221.234:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)" but that was just the site, it couldnt find the url of the player

That means you have a problem with your broadband. We can sit here and ask you a couple of million questions, or you can call your ISP and fix it with only 50,000 questions. I'm game if you are, and I know Zero is too.

i guess thats what i have to do then... this is interesting, cuz i just switched to a wireless network, i wonder if that might have something to do with it.

hmmmmmmm.....
I would call your ISP and ask if they have made any changes regarding recieving streaming content.
That is indeed strange!

I'm thinking Drivers since you've experienced this since your Format.

I dont think its drivers....he has tried more than 1 application to play files. Do you use a firewall OR if you are running XP sp2 do you use the firewall built in? Perhaps its blocking sites that load a .pls or .mp3 file extension.

ok....try turning off the firewall altogether and seeing if you can stream. If not unistall SP2 and see. If all else fails reinstall XP and try it again BEFORE you reinstall SP2.
Let us know how it goes!

how do you uninstall sp2?
Service pack two only broke custom apps, not general sofware, especially MS player software. It's not a service pack two issue.
Drop the firewall, it's common to see broken machines running more then one software firewall, infact get rid of any and all software firewalls.
Get and run a good virus scanner too. http://www.free-av.de/
