sorry duplicate post and i cant figure out how to delete this post

Using xp -- have microsoft wireless router -- matched with usb wireless adapter. Worked fine fo about eight months and lost connection at one usb connection -- changed to a different connection worked fine. Now have lost it also.

problem exist on computer with the adapter. Formatted drive and reinstalled xp and then reinstalled wireless adapter. The computer saw the new hardware and installed it. Tried to use the network wizard to get connection and it shows the adapter as not being connected. Used device manager and looked at the wireless adapter and it shows to be working correctly.

I'm missing something -- but what. Any help would be appreciated.

Not being the brightest bulb in the box I thought the usb ports were configured. So how do I check the ports out? My connection to the net is wireless broadband. I get my signal from a radio tower to a antenna on my house.

Thanks for helping with the duplicate post.

The reason I ask @ USB being configured is that you stated you had probs with them and that the system had quit working and you moved the connection to another etc. then you did a Format on the Drive . To check to see if you have USB ports Configured you need to go to My Computer then Control Panel then System then Device Manager and scroll down to bottom and see if the USB is activated. Also try hooking directly from Wireless to computer and bypass your router .

I thought I had done that before and I had. But this time I paid closer attention to the drivers. Yes all are showing there and working properly. About bypassing the router -- It will take me a couple of days -- I will have to dismantle where it is now and move it plus I need to go buy a cable. As a matter of info there are two other computers on this network and they are also wireless and working fine. And that my work takes me away from home several days at a time -- I"ll do it but it might take a little time.

Ya probablly won't need to bypass router since you have other computers on the net with it and they are wkn. Prob a configuration prob and other than sugesting you make sure about your settings for your Network and possibly changing the ethernet card in the prob computer I just don't have the experience to help you with this so hopefully Zero or Vantim can jump in here and enlighten us.

make sure your ethernet card is working. If you done a reinstall of the OS....it may not of reinstalled the drivers for the ethernet card.

goodluck!

Do I need the ethernet card installed for the wireless adapter to work properly - if so I'll open it up and put it back

You probablly have a wireless networking card I missed that in your post (sorry) so unless you are hooking Directly to a Hardwired router then you would not need it . You do havew a wireless networking card installed on the prob Computer ,right? If so do as Zero sugested(Drivers for Card) or maybe change out the card with another wkn computer.

the problem computer uses a usb network adapter no card. the other 3 computers on the network -- one hardwired into the router the other two are laptops with internal wireless adapters. Now the wireless adapter -- two lights on adapter one shows power and the other shows network connection when on. On a system restart the net connection is on (light) up to the time the windows screen appears, the the light starts to blink and the network connection shows disconnected -- I have two linksys cards and have tried those -- with these cards --they see the network but still they do not connect to the internet. Again with these cards in the network connections screen of windows it shows the adapter as not connected and in the device manager it shows the device working correctly.

Some posibilities are that the USB adapter is bad,and or cable . Is the problem Computer addy in the same workgroup as the others? and sorry to be so naive but can you hook this prob computer to the Router like the one you have Hardwired in with an ethernet Connection to test it?

Well I considered throwing money at the problem and buy another adapter but with all the other stuff I thought I would try the fixit mode first. Yes the workgroup, network name, and other settings I could check are correct. One thing that might spark a difference -- when setting up a network in windows if i change the type of network to ad hoc the connection light comes on and stays on. since i didn't want to take a chance on wrecking my other computers connections no other computers are in a ad hoc network to test it out

I am learning networking as fast as I can and am pretty much in the slow learning curve at the moment but I bet Zero or one of the other Mods can clear that aspect up for ya ,good luck to you and keep us posted .

I'm sorry....I thought you had a wired connection on the computer in question. But still my same advice applies....only terminology is different.

So I will correct myself....."Make sure you have the drivers for your WIRELESS card installed".....scratch the term "ethernet".

:D

looking at the device manager and going to the driver tab -- the drivers are installed or should i say it shows that there are drivers there

at this point....try using the device in question on another PC to rule out that the wireless device is bad.

also....have you tried "pinging" the other remote wireless machines?

open a command window.....type in "ping ipaddressofremotemachine -t" without the quotes for a continual ping, drop the -t command option for just a 4 packet ping. Ctrl C will stop the ping, Ctrl Pause/Break will pop up statistics and continuing the continual ping test.

ok --- I dont know "How" or "Why" but this thing started working again. I went through the same steps I've done many times before ie resetting the router going through all the settings of my network and this time "WALA" it works. I wish I knew what corrected this glich cause I feel it will happen again. Thanks for the help -- your suggestions on looking at different setting and checking all those connections did something somewhere someplace. Thanks again
