Being im not too computer Saavy,,i figured id start a thread on basic computer troubleshooting for computers getting slower and slower,,heres my mothers situation,

running 98SE,,
processor is a 800mhz,,133 mhz buss speed
256mb ram

i can get the particulars on mother board later

when i first installed it,,it ran great,,connected to the internet quick(as quick as ive seen dialup,,),,she uses ATT worldnet for her ISP,,gets lots of IE errors,,and has to shut down,,sometimes has to shut down the whole computer,,and reboot,,no blue screen of death,,just when she logs on,,it cant find any websites,,

i dont know the version of IE,,but im sure its an old one,,

when you try to pull up a website,,you get the light on the two computers ,,saying its transmitting,,but the one thats supposed to be receiving never blinks,,makes me think its an ISP problem,,or part of the problem,

i went into the systems setup and disabled alot of the start up items,,and it made it quicker on startup and a bit quicker on normal operations,,

i was thinking of going with 2000 for her OS,,and am pretty sure it should be fine on her processor,,any body have any experiences on that??

oh yeah,,it says system resources is around 87% most of the time,,i used to have it at 93%,,but over time its diminished,,

computers getting slower and slower
Here are a few common reasons. In no piticular order.

Hard drive speed. "can't handel the load fast enough"
Hard drive space. "the fuller you get the slower it is"
Incorrect drivers

SPYWARE "get software to remove" One of the biggest things slowing down computers.

Virus "I'm sure yours is up to date."

It may be an IE problem. Reinstall or update IE. I have also have spyware cause this problem.

Can you send and receive E-mail?

when you try to pull up a website,,you get the light on the two computers ,,saying its transmitting,,but the one thats supposed to be receiving never blinks,,makes me think its an ISP problem,,or part of the problem,
Could be. could be modem or modem drivers also.

I would recomend staying with 98se or going to XP.
They are more user friendly than 2000. "since your not PC savy"..:)

Trial and error my friend.

If I had to guess it would be SPYware or modem driver.
I had a friend of mine in vagas that had problems with internet connection and he was on cable. He had his ISP at his house and everything checked out on their line so it had to be in his PC.
So after a few days of trouble shooting I sent him a spyware program and after a scan and clean he was back up and running in minuts. It was picked up from a website he was on.....:(

I hope this helps, have a great day.

In internet settings try clearing all cookies and deleting all the caches. You may even want to do it by hand. This should improve speed.

For connection issues I suggest the run the internet connection wizard.

find and download PestPatrol......it will remove the Spyware that AV sometimes misses

as far as running 2000 on that box.....it would run fine on it....actually would prolly run alot better than XP would with the resources you have ......

but in reality...98se is a good OS....and once you rid it of spyware..im sure it will speed back up to where it was b4

i would just about bet you have some type of "GatorCorp" bull or something of the like....and more than likely more than 1 instance of each pest running things in the background

Spybots Search and Destroy is a good one too for getting rid of some that Ad-aware misses.

Why don't you try defragging it to Sunday too if you haven't already Fred. I'm running 98SE on one and it seems to help when I do it. I also found a program called window washer that helps do alot browser cleaning do a search on google for it, they have a trial program out for it. (30 days). Pm me if you get it.

Fred you can repair Win 9X in systems Information, as well as repair IE there.
First go to Start, Programs--> accessories, System Information
Click on tool on the top of the System Information window
you should see a drop down menu that has a file checker, this will examine the SYS files in Windows, you need to have the Win 9X cd handy for repairs.
Also in the same tools drop down menu you will see repair IE

These files are easily corruptable in Win 9X and need at least monthly monitoring to see if they are ok
