My Default File Location has been set to "My Documents". After I Open a File with Word Perfect, in a specific Folder under "My Documents", I want Windows to Remember the folder location I'm working with, so I can Click on the Open File Icon and it take me back to the same location.

Now, if I click on the Open File Icon it always takes me back to "My Documents" Folder.

HELP...

Most word processing progs do default to My Documents ,not sure what you are asking but if you want ,Word Perfect to automatically open the file you choose in the Folder it is in then you will need to change the properties of it(the file or doc you want to view in Word Perfect) to do so under folder options and File types . I am probablly completely off base here since I don't quite understand the Question but tell us where you want to go from here and someone will help you ....

Let's see if I understand. you save your word perfect files in a sub-folder of my documents. Right? When you open word perfect and then click open (from within word perfect) it starts looking in the My Documents folder. Correct? But, you want word perfect to start in the sub-folder where all your documents are stored. There-by eliminating "one click".

Unfortunately, I think you may be stuck. the only way that may be possible is the modify the registry. WARNING!!!!!! Modifying the registry may be hazardous to your computers health. Unless you know what your doing in your computers registry stay out. If I had the program I would be able to work on the problem for you. You may try emailing the people that make word perfect and see if they have a fix for you. But at this time the only thing I can tell you is to keep your documents in the My Documents folder or just deal with the one extra click. sorry :(

I haven't used Word Perfect in probably 10 years, so I'm worthless when it comes to specifics on it, but most programs of that nature have a way to define your "home" directory for the app. It will be a registry entry as vantim indicated, but the program might be able to modify that entry for you. Do a little poking around in the Word Perfect help system... search on different key words that could lead you to the answer. If you can't find a option to change the default home directory within Word Perfect, you do always still have the option to manually change the registry, but I have to bow to vantim's strong and very important advise about modifying the registry.

Some of us here could help you if you aren't intimately familiar with the registry, but it could be a tedious process.

Of course the easiest option is to just put everything in the My Documents folder. That's what it's for. It's specific to individual users, so you won't see other people's files

Yes, I am using the software WP in my example, but it doesn't matter! If you use MS Word, click on the Open File icon, it will go to the Default Folder to retrieve your file, if you have sub-folders, scroll down to Open a sub-folder to Open a File. After you once Open a File, you will be able to Click on the Open Folder again and it will Remember the sub-folder that was last Opened... Try it on your word processing software...and see.

Thus, I conclude that my problem is not with the software that is being used, but something in Windows?

I understand what you are saying. MS Word by default uses the last folder you accessed as your default folder. That is a registry entry that the Word application modifies every time you open a file. However Word also allows you to specify a specific static folder to always be used no matter what your last folder was. That is also a registry entry that overrides the "last opened" registry entry.

My suggestion to you was to search the help index within Word Perfect to see if there is a setting that specifies the default directory. Have you tried that yet?

If you do a search in the MS Word help system on "default directory", there will be a hit on "how to change the default working folder". There's probably something like that in Word Perfect as well, but I can't say for sure because I don't use Word Perfect.

The developers of Word Perfect may not have chosen to use the "last opened" route like the developers of MS Word did, but Word Perfect is a pretty sophisticated program, so I can't imagine them NOT incorporating the feature to allow you to change the default working folder.

As far as it always remembering the last folder you opened, that may well be an option in Word Perfect also, but unless somebody who knows for sure posts in here, your only choice is to check out the help system in Word Perfect or keep browsing the web till you find a help site where somebody does know for sure.

Yes word will do that but, not all apps will. The problem is not with windows. the problem (so to speak) is the word processor giving you the trouble. (And I'm not defending windows by any means) The programmers that coded word perfect for windows is to blame for your inconvienence. If it was windows then all programs would react the same way. The coder for the program is responsible for making the program do things. Install word perfect on another computer and it will work the same way it does on your computer. I guarantee it.
