There shouldn't be a backwards compatability issue with a Word document, but there will be an upwards compatibility issue. What I suspect is that you had the latest windows update packages on the ME word package, and don't have it on the XP install. If you install Office XP and ensure that you have all of the latest updates from the windows site, there should be no problem opening the documents.

The only other thing I can think of is that you may have selected the wrong encoding format when you burned the files to CD, or a different encoding format when you restored them. If that's the case, you'll need to start searching around for the appropriate conversion utility. I hope that's not the case 'cause it'll be a nightmare figuring it out.

If you want to pm me with one of the Word documents, I'll be glad to look at it and see if I can open it, and I'll try to figure out what your problem is, and make some better qualified suggestions.

It's possible these were created in Works and the formattting is different. Or the files are corrupt. Did you personally create these files, or did somebody else create them? Office will sometimes not understand a file created in works.

Try taking the cd to another computer and see if they will open. I think you will find the files to be at fault.
