View Full Version : I need tips for using a notebook
This might sound stupid but I've just bought a laptop yesterday and this is the first time that I've ever used a laptop so I have no idea how to handle it. Firstly, when I wanted to use to laptop at home where I'll be plugging it to the power point (or whatever you called it) do I need to take the battery off? Secondly, when I still had the power on, can I close the lid of the laptop? Will it do any damages if I close the laptop without turning the laptop off? Thank you for your help.

Depending on the Make and Model then when you plug in to a Docking Station or a House Current Recepticle you should have no problems as the computer knows to convert the power source and as for leaving it on most later models have a sleep mode it goes or Hibernates when the Top is closed .
Thanks for your help. Sorry I've forgot to post the model of my laptop. It's Acer Aspire 3000. Thank you!!!

That model was discontinued from a search on the Web and appears to be around a 1998 Vintage ,but here is a link to their USERS GUIDE for it http://www.acersupport.com/library/v70maug.pdf
Thank you for your help, Imnobs. You've been very helpful.

Imnobs pretty much gave you all you need but I'll answer the lid question. You can have the laptop do a number of things when you shut the lid. To access the options right click on a blank area of the desktop and choose properties. Under the screensaver tab you'll find the power options. In there you will find options for how your laptop will behave with battery power and wall power. Also you'll find what do you want to do when the lid is closed. I believe you can choose from:
do nothing
hibernate
sleep
or shutdown.
You can also tell it what to do if you hit the power button. (The same set of options; I think)
Good luck and have fun with your new lappy.
Thank You Vantim. I've learn something new everytime I visit here. Thanks a million.
