Well I’m abit stuck here, I formatted the hard drive on my main pc using fdisk and format tools on a windows 98 boot disk. I was going to load windows 64 bit edition on to the main pc but from the dos promt I cant’t run the disc using the setup command ie e:/ (enter) setup. It says connot run in dos mode the 64bit edition does not seem to be a bootable disc as when I try it the other way (reset pc put in 64bit disc change the boot up to cd) it wont boot just comes up missing operating sys does anyone know how I can overcome any of these problems and how I can install windows fron this 64 bit disc all the files seem to be there when I check the 64bit cd’s directory files

A wee bit more info would be helpful to us here like do you have a 64bit cpu . ? Motherboard specs? Also You will need to install drivers for your CD to work with the disk you have since you formatted the drive..

Ok here is some more:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896334
The installation of the Windows x64 Edition-based operating system must be performed by starting the computer by using the Windows x64 Edition installation CD-ROM or by starting the installation from within another Windows 64-bit operating system.
Basel, make sure your computer is set to boot to the cd-rom. Enter the bios (F2, F10, or Del) and look for the boot order section and set your cd-rom to the first boot device. Your gonna have to do some reading. I'll find as much as I can.

Also here is some notes:
Installing Windows XP 64-Bit Edition
Setup for Windows XP 64-Bit Edition is divided into two phases. The first phase is text-mode Setup. During this phase, Setup copies files to the computer, checks your hardware, and configures your installation. You can also choose to create multiple partitions during this phase. Your computer will restart at the end of this phase.
The second phase is GUI-mode Setup. During this phase, Setup gathers information such as regional settings, user name and password, and network information. Your computer restarts again when Setup is complete.
Installing for the First Time
Setup creates the EFI system partition and the MSR partition automatically. It is recommended that you create a single data partition of no less than 6 GB for installing the operating system.
To install Windows XP on a clean machine:
1. Ensure that the hardware for your Itanium-based computer is set up properly and that everything is attached as it should be.
2. Turn on your computer.
3. Insert the Windows XP 64-Bit Edition CD into the CD-ROM drive.
4. When prompted in the EFI Boot Manager, boot to the CD-ROM drive.
When you see "Press any key to boot from CD-ROM...", press a key and Windows XP text-mode Setup begins.
If the CD does not start automatically, boot to the EFI shell, select the CD-ROM drive, and type:
setupldr
and then press ENTER.
Note: Setup can create the EFI system partition and the MSR partition automatically. If you want, you can choose to create the EFI system partition yourself, but it is recommended that you let Setup create this partition.
5. When prompted to install Windows, determine the size of your data partition. The recommended minimum size for installing Windows XP 64-Bit Edition is 6 GB.
6. Follow the directions that appear. Once GUI-mode setup is complete, the computer restarts automatically.

The cd should be bootable! So that means one of 2 things are going on.
1. The cd is bad. Try booting to the cd in another computer and see if it boots to it. If it doesn't then something is wrong with the cd
2. The Drive is bad. Try booting to a known good bootable cd. ( like any other windows OS cd) and see if the computer will boot to it. If it won't then try a different cd drive and see if it will work.
That is the only 2 possibilities that will keep you from booting to your cd if all your bios settings are correct. The no operating system message your recieving is because it can't access the mbr on the hard drive. That is because you formatted the drive. Apparantly the computer is accessing your hard drive first. So it either has the wrong boot order, or it doesn't see a bootable cdrom.
So you're going to have to do these 2 tests before you can go any further. When you booted to the 98 boot disk were you able to access your cd drive from it?

Also you can't install WinXP64 to a regular partition. Boot to the 98 boot disk and use FDISK again and remove that partition. If you read all the info I supplied you, you will see XP64 cannot use standard partitions.
