Hi
I have a Dell 4100 with Windows ME. When I turned on my computer, all the icons and pictures where oversized and weird looking.......like dotted etc. My NAV had a big red x over it.......I didn't know what to do so I called Dell and we did all these different things and he check my hard drive and it passed he wanted me to uninstall NAV, but it wouldn't let me.......so he said I should call Norton.........after I got off the phone I but the NAV cd in and was able to uninstall it and reinstall it, but the everthing on the computer still looks weird and I don't know how to change it..........It kinda looks like its in safe mode, but its not. Oh, also I also looked on another forum and someone said it should be on high color (16 bit) -I did try to change to that to see if would work, but it wouldn't let me change........I don't know very much about computers, so I really need some help. Thanks.Lojo

Right click on your desktop any where in a clear area; a menu will appear; select the properties tab and let us know what it says under Colors and Screen area

Try the dropdown where it is showing your 16 colors. You should be able to select a higher resolution. At least 16bit or higher. If you dont have that high of a res showing. You have lost your video card driver. You will need to reinstall it.

Once you select it to a res of at least 16bit....then change your resolution settings to 800x600 or 1024x768...and you will be good to go!

Also, If you don't have the option for a higher resolution, you could try a system restore. Click Start>Programs>accessories>system tools>system restore. Then choose restore my computer to another time. Look for a date on the calendar that dates back to before all this mess started and choose it. With any luck windows will restore itself and you'll be ok again.

My advice to you is...If you can afford to spend about $100 pick up a copy of Windows XP home edition upgrade. It's a more stable and better Operating system than Windows ME. It's real easy to upgrade. Pretty much just pop the cd in and choose to upgrade then follow the prompts. In about an hour or so you'll be running XP.

You need to update your video driver IMO. Sometimes when not completely installed or out of date the driver may cause this.

If you still have probs then go to Control Panel and click on System then Device Manager then Monitor and see if there are any probs there like a yellow question mark or exclamation point . Problem may be with your drivers there also .
