Hey,
I'm a newb to this forum and i am in need of urgent help. I have just recently replaced my hard drive with a new one. After i installed it onto the computer and whatnot, i wanted to install xp home on it. I put in the xp disc and it brought me to Windows Set Up. I followed their instructions by formating the drive and at the end it prompted me to reboot to continue with the installation. However after it reboot, it brought me back to the Windows Set Up page, as if i didn't already format the drive. I've tried numerous things such as partitioning it among other things. Also, when i go into the BIOS, it doesn't seem to recognize my hd. Right now i have all of the drives (master and slave) set to auto. The only way it sees the hd is when i click on auto and it identifies it correctly. So i save and exit the BIOS, but when i restart it does recognize it anymore. I set the new hd to primary master so i can easily move my files from my old hd.
I'm in desperate need of help. IM me on AIM at jaggster18 or email me at AMeiri@gmail.com if you can help. Thanks in advance.

Hey,
For any of you who were going to help, i fixed the problem. Apparently i had the jumper on the hd set to master instead of single use.
However, now i am having another problem. I installed xp home, got sp 2 and installed a few other programs. However i am having a problem with connecting some USB devices. I can connect my usb 2.0 flash drive and xp recognizes it fine. But when i connect my ipod (i haven't installed itunes yet) or my usb printer, nothing happens. It's as if xp doesn't see it at all..no error message, nothing. I checked my driver manager and it said all of my ports worked fine and there were no problems.
If you can help me respond to this post or im me on AIM at Jaggster18 or email me at AMeiri@gmail.com.
Please help...thanks in advance.

I believe you do have to install software for your iPod as well, I can't really remember if I did or not, but I'm pretty sure you do. It should have came with a disc.

I was able to install most of my devices, by using the add new hardware feature from XP.
But now i have another problem. Whenever i log in as a user and want to switch users (by not logging off), and when i go to another user, my computer just restarts. I don't understand why, it just restarts when i click on another user when i switch users. I can log off a user and go to another user, and it is ok.
Also i was playing around with my screen saver and when i clicked preview, it just restarted the comptuer. I'm not sure why.
My comp:
Windows XP Home SP2 (dled sp2)
P4 with ht 2.8 ghz
512mb ram
250 gb western digital hd (just got it)
ATI Radeon 9200 128 mb graphics card
If u can help please respond!!! Email me if u can.
Thanks

Please don't ask for e-mail replies. We respond to posts only on the forums for many reasons the main one being is we as wll as others can see whats going on with your or others probs and ours too....lol but your prob could be anything to hardware probs to memory failure or even in admin, options and the updates you have been getting from Microsoft ie SP2 but you might try going to
system properties / advanced / startup and recovery?
There's an option there that makes the system restart eveytime there's a system faillure. Make sure it's disabled.

Try this: Right click My Computer,
Properties,
Advanced tab,
Settings button (Starup and Recovery),
uncheck Automatically Restart.
I think you may be getting a stop screen when you try to switch users. This way if you get a stop screen we may be able to diagnose it.

Vantim, i did what u said and after i tried to switch users i got a blue screen that said there was a system faillure of some sort. So right now i'm trying to think about what i should do next? Someone suggested i first try to go to a restore point before installing SP2. If that doesn't work, i should try to repair xp by booting of the cd.
What do u think?
thanks.

You need to write down what the blue screen says and post it here so we can diagnose the problem. A repair on xp won't do any good if it's some else like a hardware problem. The bluescreen will give us an indication of what's wrong.

Hey Vantim,
Sorry for taking so long, but here is what the screen says:
"A problem has been dettected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your copmputer. If this is the first time you have seen this message please follow these steps.
Check to be sure you have adequte disk space (I have 250 gbs). If a driver is identified in the Stop Message, disable driver or check for updates. Try changing video adaptors.
Check your hardware vendor for updates and BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. if oyu need to use safe mode to remove or diable components, restart your fomputer, press F8 to select advance startup options, and select safe mode.
Technical information:
Stop: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBFA72F5D, 0xEEF7748C, 0x00000000)
At: 3duag.dll, address: BFA72F5D
base at BFA2100, date stamp: 3edcD62B"
That's pretty much it. I'm not really sure what else to do. Thanks.

download Memtest86+ 1.51 and follow the instructions to check your memory. A Stop: 0x0000008E is almost always an indication of a bad memory module. Download it here:

Hi!!
I've experienced the same problem with an identical blue error page. It happens when I disconnect from my account and I use the "change account" function.
I'v tried with memtest and I've left it working for a whole night, but it didn't looked like it has finished its job (after 7 hours it was at about 50%!!!).
I've tried to change my three RAM to see if it was one of them but the problem is still present with any of them.
Anyone as any idea?
