View Full Version : Cox Cable...More than one computer?
Hi all....
First of all, this is a very nice place. I am the newest member and hope to enjoy the long stay here! :)
Ok, so I finally bought COX cable and installed it on my laptop in my room. Well, I also have another laptop in the MAIN room that I would like to hook up to COX as well. So here are some questions for ya'll:
1. All I need is a wireless router, correct?
2. Basically buy the router, then splice the cable and hook the cable in to the router and the ethernet connection into the computer?
3. Install COX CD disc on new laptop.
4. Done?
Thanks all, I really apprecaite the help as soon as you all can give it to me!

well actually it maybe easier. First decide if both or one will be wireless. Point being make sure the wireless router has some wired connections too.
1) aquire wireless router
2) aquire necessary wireless cards for computers that will connect wirelessly
3) hook cable->modem->router->workstations
4) configure each according to the router instructions
I think ya can do it.
Hey thanks! The dell laptop (the other one, not the laptop where cox is now) is wireless. Now question for ya'! Am I really gonna need a new modem as well? I thought the router would work if I turned on the one modem I have in the house?
Thanks again guys,
Abel
The modem you have will be fine. From the wall to the modem to the router to your PCs.
So it should be a snap? I hope so...I am going to get the router either tomarrow or Wedn. so I might need you again!
Thanks
Just holler. It's kinda easy these days.
So, quick question again (I know, sorry....trying to learn all this stuff, this is all new to me): the router has to go through the modem that I have. So all in all, how would I get the router connected to the other laptop from my room (where the router and modem apparently sit)?
Whew...thanks again,
Abel
That was the one I thought would be wireless. If not, you'll need an RJ-45 Patch cable of the proper length.
Nah, wireless laptop will sit in my "Arizona Room" and the one with the COX CABLE NOW is in my room w/modem.
Sorry, should have been better explaining!
Yep, then just use a patch cable to one of the switch ports in your router. That should do it.
So where do I go for a PATCH cable? Does Best Buy or something have them?
Didn't get to this project yet (incase anyone else is reading...lol) becuase I want to make sure I know what I am doing and have all necessary tools to complete this job, instead of having to run all around to get them in the middle of the project!!!
Yes, you should be able to get the cables where you buy the router. Make sure they are RJ-45 patch cables. Be careful, I have had customers go and get cables and come back with phone wires because they were less money and even once the clerk at the store was not knowledgable and sent phone wire out the door.
Very cool....I will make sure of this. Once again, thanks for all your help. Are you the only one that knows all this biz-ness...or what? Not in a bad way man....but damn, me and you are the only ones on here!
Thanks again and will shout if I need help. And let you know how I did once I get it completely done!

This place has been around for about a year or two. It was basically an extension of my business on the web. We did not promote it nor advetise the site.
Recently I decided to promote the place, so despite being around, the community is basically new.
I hope to bring in more qualified folks to help in the future. There are a few here that do help already too.
I won't be able to do this myself all the time. Hopefully more community members that can help will join and pitch in. I've yet to work out a promotion for incentive, but that's on the agenda too.
I know alot, but certainly not it all. It's one thing to sit in front of a computer and fix it, it's another to instruct someone with no experience to do that from typed text. So we will do our best, however there may be limits to the help available despite our best efforts.
All I can say is, wow! This is a nice place. I can help in some subjects (been in computers for a little why, on problems and what not...IT kinda?) but this cable stuff is pretty new along with networking it to my house. So I appreciate all the help once again man!

Let us know when you get your router so we can help you through it. It's pretty easy though.
